AI search optimization: Why Google’s new guide is misleading

Google’s (Misleading) AI search Guide. Are you only building for Google, or the entire AI economy?

By Shawn Roberts | Hyper Agency AB | June 15, 2026

You might have seen that Google released an official guide recently on how to optimize your content for generative AI search. While the article provides factual information, treating it as the definitive playbook for the future of search is a massive risk for your brand.

A closer technical look reveals four massive blind spots: it focuses exclusively on the Google ecosystem, assumes companies already have a solid SEO baseline, ignores the transactional realities of e-commerce/B2B brands, and limits ‘SEO’, ‘AIO’, whatever you would like to call it, to a single website instead of your broader, multi-platform digital footprint.

If you only build your site to meet Google’s baseline standards, you risk disappearing from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and other AI searches. These platforms simply don’t crawl the web the way Googlebot does. Bing and Copilot sit in a hybrid position. They share Microsoft’s massive search index and can render complex, interactive code (JavaScript) just like Google – but their AI answer layers still select and prioritize content using entirely different structural signals. You need to ensure you are not just building for one search engine, and playing catch-up as this new recommendation economy takes off.

Here is the reality check on Google’s advice, and what your brand actually needs to do to survive the shift to AI search.

1. Basic SEO: You might already be behind

Google claims that optimizing for AI is just optimizing for search, essentially saying, “Keep doing what you are doing.”

The glaring issue here is that a majority of companies don’t even have a strong, standard base of SEO to begin with. If your technical foundation is flawed, you aren’t just missing out on traditional Google traffic – you are completely invisible to the data-scrapers feeding new AI models. As this new era of AI search kicks in, brands with poor foundational SEO are starting from ten steps behind.

2. The limits of storytelling (and the shift to Hybrid, human/AI copy)

Google heavily pushes the idea of writing purely for people, advising brands to focus on “expert-led narratives” and “unique points of view.” If your brand wants to lean into storytelling, that is completely fine – people connect with a good narrative.

Storytelling also supports Google, because their traditional ranking algorithm heavily rewards user engagement. The longer a person stays on your page reading a narrative (often called a “long click”), the more it signals high quality to Google.

But here is what Google leaves out: AI bots do not have an attention span or “dwell time.” While traditional search engines track how long a person reads your story, AI engines are built to hunt for precise answers and clear solutions. AI models operate on retrieval and precision. Retrieval systems break your page into chunks and rank them on clarity and directness before they ever hit the model. If your actual solution is buried in the tenth paragraph of a meandering story, that chunk often loses to a competitor that surfaces the answer cleanly in a heading, list, or short Q&A block.

You do not have to choose between writing for people and writing for AI. We believe the winning strategy is to find the middle ground: “Hybrid (human/AI) copy.”

For your consumer: Write your engaging narrative, brand story, and your unique point of view to keep them on the page.

For AI: Structure that narrative with clear definitions, bulleted takeaways, bolded solutions, and straightforward executive summaries.

By using Hybrid Copy, you hook the human reader – satisfying Google’s traditional engagement metrics – while giving AI the exact, easily extractable answers it needs to confidently recommend you.

Because ultimately: if you spend weeks writing beautifully crafted copy, but the AI never recommends your site and no people ever find it… was it really worth the effort?

3. Schema is the “data glue” for the entire AI ecosystem

Google takes a very narrow micro-lens approach in its guide, claiming structured data isn’t strictly required for AI to understand your text. For e-commerce, B2B, and growing transactional brands, following this advice is a massive mistake.

AI engines don’t think in isolated web pages; they think in connected “Entities.” Before an AI recommends a business, it cross-references its foundational Knowledge Graph to see if you are verified. This is where site-wide Schema comes in – acting as a digital barcode across your entire multi-platform footprint to provide instant, undeniable proof.

The Entity Web & The LLM (AI Search) Confidence Signal: Mega-brands like Apple don’t need to worry about this; the AI already has billions of data points on who they are. But for growing brands, LLMs need machine-readable trust signals before they recommend you. Microsoft has explicitly confirmed that Bing and Copilot use schema markup to help their LLMs understand and interpret web content, not just for classic blue links. For AI platforms like ChatGPT and Perplexity, schema acts as a digital cheat sheet. It gives the AI a direct shortcut to understand and extract your information – increasing your chances of being recommended, even if these companies don’t publicly document it the way Microsoft does.

How Google Merchant Center & The Shopping Graph Rely on Schema: Despite the casual tone of their PR article, divisions like Google Merchant Center and the Google Shopping Graph treat structured data as a primary source of truth for product accuracy and sync. Google explicitly uses schema.org Product/Offer markup to power Automatic Item Updates and even to build feeds directly from your site when you use the “website crawl” method. Google Search Central’s own developer documentation explicitly states that adding ‘Product’ and ‘Offer’ schema is what enables your products to appear in premium merchant listing experiences. If your feed says $50 but your landing page shows $60, Google doesn’t guess. Automatic Item Updates compare your feed against your structured data markup and landing page, then adjust Merchant Center to match what’s actually on the site (from support.google. It checks your backend schema to verify the real price. When this data is intact, Google’s Automatic Item Updates feature seamlessly syncs price drops, triggers “In Stock” badges, and maps direct checkout links.

And if you don’t add this Schema? Without it, Google is forced to blindly scrape plain text. This frequently triggers data mismatches, leading to disapproved Google Merchant Center listings. When an AI agent (or a human) wants to make a fast purchase, they will bypass your unverified website and buy from the competitor whose digital barcode provides instant, frictionless proof.

As Google engineer Pascal Fleury put it at Search Central Live Zurich, when talking about shopping and structured data interoperability: “Schema.org is the glue that holds all these ontologies together.”

4. Enter the multiverse of AI Search (the crawling reality)

Google talks about AI search, but these guidelines are written strictly for their search engine. You cannot assume this applies to all AI search models. Engines like ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Claude function completely differently and read the web using a fundamentally different technical architecture.

Context over legacy: Google relies on 25 years of domain authority and historical backlinks. Alternative LLMs focus almost entirely on immediate semantic relevance and “Citation Readability.” If a multi-million-dollar legacy brand buries the answer in a bloated page, the AI will drop it and cite a smaller site that provided a perfectly organized, highly structured answer.

The JavaScript Blindspot (The Raw Code Reality): Googlebot utilizes a massively expensive rendering infrastructure to read heavy JavaScript (complex, interactive code). Alternative LLM crawlers – specifically GPTBot, PerplexityBot, and ClaudeBot – are built for speed and low overhead. Multiple independent studies show that these LLMs fetch raw HTML and do not execute JavaScript, meaning pure client-side rendering leaves them blind to your core content.

If your brand spent $100,000 on a beautiful website that relies on client-side rendering (React, Angular) to load your core text or products, you are completely invisible to ChatGPT. To these AI engines, your expensive website just looks like a blank page.

The fix is simple, but non-optional: Your website must deliver its text and product info instantly, completely pre-built from the server. If your site relies on background code to piece everything together after a bot arrives, the AI will already be gone.

The Bottom Line

Google’s guide is a great PR piece for how they want the web to look, but it is not a technical blueprint for the entire AI economy. Investing in perfectly structured data and hybrid copy is no longer about legacy SEO rankings. It is an investment in your brand’s core data infrastructure – ensuring you are perfectly understood and recommended across the next generation of AI search, and crucially, keeping your business from being left out of the results entirely.
