Is Reddit disappearing from ChatGPT?

Reddit has not disappeared from AI. It has disappeared from the footnotes.

Between August 8th and 14th, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from approximately 3.83% to 0.52%. That is a relative decline of 86.4%.

But this is where the story becomes more important. During the same period, Reddit still represented 25–34% of the pages ChatGPT consulted.

The content was still being retrieved. It could still influence the final answer. It simply lost its visible attribution.

This is not merely a Reddit update. It exposes a fundamental weakness in how many companies and most SaaS products are currently measuring AI visibility:

Citation is not the same as influence.

An AI system can:

→ use a source without citing it

→ cite a source without recommending the brand

→ recommend a brand without generating a click

→ use a competitor’s information to shape the final answer

The source mix also appears to be changing.

Institutional, government and non-profit sources increased from 17.1% to 29.6% of citations, while brand-owned and commercial websites remained relatively stable at around 67%.

Reddit, media, forums and directories all declined sharply.

The strategic implication is significant. The future of AI visibility will not be won by placing more mentions across third-party platforms.

It will be won by becoming the most reliable source available. To do that you need:

→ structured product and service data

→ clear specifications and documentation

→ verifiable claims and supporting evidence

→ rich schema markup

→ stable entities and relationships

→ credible external validation

At Hyper Agency, we believe AI visibility must be measured across four separate layers:

1. Retrieval:   Did the AI system access your information?

2. Citation:   Were you presented as a visible source?

3. Recommendation:   Was your brand or product actually recommended?

4. Action:   Did that recommendation lead to a visit, enquiry or purchase?

OpenAI hasn’t confirmed that Reddit was deliberately downgraded, and the available data does not establish causation. What can be observed is that the visible source-selection pattern has changed, while the retrieval continued.

The real risk is not that your brand is no longer cited. It is that AI uses everyone else’s information to shape the customer’s decision, while your brand never reaches the invisible shortlist.
